Applesauce is one of those things that we buy out of convenience. However, once you make it at home, you will never have store-bought again. The taste is so much better without the preservatives and the added sugar. Plus, the recipe can be doubled and you can modify the spices for your taste. Great for snack or to add to other recipe.
Non-sugar-added Applesauce
- 1 apple, cubed (keep the peel for extra fiber)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 5 whole cloves
1. In a small pan, add the apple cubes, cinnamon and whole cloves and/or any other spices.
2. Add enough water to cover the bottom so it doesn’t burn (about 2-4 tbsp). Cover and turn on the heat and let it boil for 30-45 mins or until the apple pieces can be easily mashed. If the water evaporates, add a little more water to cover the bottom.
3. Take out the spices and process the apple until smooth. Alternatively, you can use a potato smasher or a fork to smash the apple.
